Rogier Elshout is an international moderator and strategic event designer with 15 years of full-time experience and a particular expertise in European affairs.
He combines substance with energy. He quickly gets to the core of complex issues, translates abstract or technical discussions into something concrete and relevant, and creates an atmosphere in which people actually want to participate.
Whether moderating a high-level policy conference, facilitating a strategic meeting or hosting an award show, the goal is never simply to run the programme. It is to make the event work.
More than a moderator
A successful event starts long before anyone walks onto the stage.
Rogier works with clients to define what the event should achieve and then helps design the programme, formats, speakers and interaction around those goals.
Challenging the usual for more results
That means challenging the usual formats, agendas and methods. For everybody there is a method that makes them shine, but not everybody shines in every format. Finding the question everybody should really be discussing. And designing interaction that has a strategic purpose rather than interaction for interaction's sake.
The result: speakers who shine, audiences who feel involved and events that deliver more return on the time and money invested in them.
Chameleon
Rogier does any kind of event. On any topic. "One day I'm facilitating a small, very in depth meeting and the next day I host an award show. One day I have an event on health care, the next day on using EU satellite data in development cooperation. The only constant factor is that I always adjust methods, atmosphere, energy level and even my clothing to fit the event."
Dry topics to life
Rogier's talent is to bring dry topics to life and complicated matter back to the essence. "By making the abstract concrete, using examples and taking things into absurdity, it is not only less boring, it also helps to find the issues we should really be talking about."
At home in Europe
With 20 years of experience in European affairs, Rogier knows the Brussels bubble from the inside. He understands its institutions, politics, terminology and sensitivities — but also knows how to translate them for people outside that bubble. He is also the host of Brussels Bubbles, a talk show built around a simple idea: European politics can be substantive without being boring.
